We want to lay out ecactly why our class is different from other classes on the market and why we actually think it will help with your decision fatigue.

Rooted in Science, not dogma

Cultivating trust instead of fear

Too often birth resources stoke fear and distrust around the idea of hospitals and doctors. We could go on and on about the way that alternative bith providers have created an echo chamber on social media to market their services because unlike hospitals who don't need to market themselves to get patients to deliver there, alternative birth providers will only prosper if they succeed at diverting patients away from the healthcare system. The healthare system is also too busy to counter or fact check the online marketing of alternative birth providers so it continues unchecked. Unfortunately, most people who birth in hospitals will also consume a lot of this content and come into the relationship wuth their care team with defensiveness and distrust. That is never a good way to go into a relationship with anyone. Not to mention that this fear and tension can inhibit your body's release of oxytocin which can slow labor. You don't need to gear up for battle to go ito the hospital. We can help you prepare in a way that brings confidence without the fear.

Removing the binaries that promote shame

Sometimes people ask us if our class is "like Lamaze", and our answer is a resounding "no". Almost everyone has heard of Lamaze, but not everyone understands the deeper role that Lamaze plays in our birth culture. Lamaze international has published their "six healthy birth practices" that most birth educators consider to be the gold standard for "healthy" and "normal" birth. While there is nothing inherently wrong with the items on the list, the publication and popularization of such a list - especially without any other perspectives to counter it, has become problematic. The promotion of a "healthy" or "normal" way to do something sets up a binary that then by default means that anything counter to the six healthy birth practices is "unhealthy" or not normal. By removing the value associated with certain practices we can challenge the idea that there is one "right" way to birth. This is especially important as maternal mental health has stedily declined over the last 40 years. With WOMB, we encourage you to make the choices that will help you feel safe, empowered, and confortable, and we know firsthand that that ill look different for every family. What we do care about isn't how long you breastfed, but that you feel supported and in charge of your own health.
